Mohammed Shami enhanced Team India’s World Cup 2023 fortunes by delivering captivating match-winning spells against New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka. Despite finding a place in the Indian playing XI only towards the backend of the league stage, the cricketer has already tallied 16 wickets to emerge as one of the leading bowlers of the competition.

Generating seam and swing at thunderous speeds, India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey recently recounted the cricketer’s seam position, and even compared it with that of former Indian fast bowler S Sreesanth.

Bowling coach heaps praise on Mohammed Shami

A couple of days prior to India’s World Cup 2023 semi-final standoff against New Zealand, the ‘Men in Blue’ bowling coach Paras Mhambrey heaped praise on team’s all-firing bowling attack, and singled out Mohammed Shami for his late surge in the tournament.

Mhambrey hailed Shami for his mysterious seam position, one which even keeps the batsmen guessing. The bowling coach also compared the seam accuracy of the veteran Indian speedster with that of former fast bowler S Sreesanth. He said:

“Mohammed Shami is someone who has the seam [which hits] straight upright. You never know when Shami hits that seam, which way it's going to come. Is it going to come in? And he raises those questions again.

You know, the batsman is always guessing. And the ability to hit that seam is spot on. I’ve never seen, very few, I think Sreesanth was one of the bowlers at the international level, that I’d seen with the accuracy and ability to hit that seam. Shami is that. So that kind of confusion, plus the pace.”

Mohammed Shami, despite featuring in only five World Cup 2023 games for Team India so far, has already snared 16 wickets in the tournament. Among all bowlers with more than one wicket to their name in the competition, Shami also holds the best bowling average, 9.56, all while maintaining an economy rate of just 4.78 an over.
