Virat Kohli punched out a sizzling 51 against Netherlands to register his seventh fifty-plus score of the ongoing 2023 World Cup. The innings also extended Kohli’s tournament tally to 594 runs, taking him past South African opening batsman Quinton de Kock as the leading run-getter of the competition.

As Kohli and the rest of his teammates brace themselves for India’s upcoming World Cup 2023 semi-final against New Zealand, the match also presents a unique opportunity for the cricketer to scale a huge World Cup record, previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Virat Kohli just 81 runs away from this Tendulkar record

Virat Kohli has tallied 593 runs from nine World Cup 2023 innings to emerge as the leading run-getter of the competition following the conclusion of the league stage. Maintaining an astonishing average of 99, the 35-year-old has listed two centuries and five additional fifty-plus scores, all in winning causes for his country.

Former Indian cricketer and Kohli’s batting predecessor Sachin Tendulkar, on the other hand, minted 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup to attain the all-time world record of scoring most runs in a single edition of the tournament.

If Kohli manages to score 81 more runs through the course of India’s remaining World Cup 2023 fixture(s), he will blaze past Tendulkar to claim the huge World Cup batting milestone.

The cricketer is currently slated to turn up for his national side in their upcoming semi-final showdown against New Zealand. Earlier in the tournament, the ‘Men in Blue’ became the first team to qualify for the knockouts owing to their unbeaten run in the league stages.

India’s much-awaited semifinal faceoff against New Zealand will be hosted by the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15.
