After stumps on day 1, India are 16/1 and trail by 243 runs. The Kiwis, batting first, put 259 runs on the board. In reply, the hosts have lost Rohit Sharma for a duck.
New Zealand, batting first, put 259 runs on the board. The Kiwis started strongly but last seven wickets for 62 runs courtesy of Washington Sundar's spell. Notably, Sundar registered a seven-wicket haul that led to New Zealand's downfall.
Sunil Gavaskar Makes Hypocritical Stance On Washington Sundar
While the internet is buzzing with Sundar's heroics against New Zealand, former India opener turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar is facing criticism over his hypocritical stance on Sundar.
Notably, before the start of the match, Gavaskar was critical of Washington's selection and questioned Kuldeep Yadav's omission from the Team. However, Gavaskar changed his stance once he registered a five-wicket haul.
"I don't see a lot of teams making three changes unless there are injury concerns. Washington Sundar's inclusion tells you they are worried about their batting. More than his bowling, they need his batting down the order as the cushion. Yes, there is a lot of talk about the left-handers in the New Zealand batting unit, but I would have picked Kuldeep Yadav, who can also turn it away from a left-hander," said Gavaskar.
"The selection of Washington Sundar tells me that the Indian team was worried about their batting. He is in not just because of his off-spin but because he can get more runs at the lower order," he added.
Gavaskar Hails Sundar's Bowling After Five-Wicket Haul
It is worth noting that as soon as Sundar registered a seven wicket-haul, Gavaskar took a U-Turn on his earlier stance and hailed Sundar's masterclass. "What an inspired selection. He is picked in the XI because he can bat a little bit, bowl a little bit,” he remarked.
