South Africa has surged to fourth place on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings after their emphatic seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Mirpur. The win significantly boosted their point-percentage to 47.62%, allowing the Proteas to leapfrog New Zealand and England in the rankings. Meanwhile, Bangladesh's defeat has dropped their point-percentage to 30.56%, leaving them languishing in seventh place.
BAN Vs SA: Quick Recap Of The 1st Test
The Test began with Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto opting to field, a decision that proved costly as South Africa's bowling attack, led by the pace-spin combination of Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj, dismantled the hosts for just 106 runs.
Although Bangladesh’s spinners fought back in South Africa's first innings, with Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan sharing seven wickets between them, but South Africa still managed to establish a commanding 202-run lead. Kyle Verreynne’s fighting century, along with key contributions from Mulder and Dane Piedt, were instrumental in the Proteas' imposing total.
Bangladesh's second innings saw a spirited fightback from Mehidy Hasan, who played a valiant knock of 97, guiding his team to a respectable 307. Rabada was once again the standout bowler for South Africa, finishing with outstanding figures of 6/46, his best performance in Asia.
However, Bangladesh's efforts were not enough to stave off defeat, as South Africa required just 106 runs to win. Openers Tony de Zorzi 41 and Tristan Stubbs 30*ensured that the visitors comfortably reached the target with seven wickets in hand.
