'I Don't Agree With This At All...,' Aakash Chopra Slams India's Selection Policies Ahead Of Asia Cup And World Cup

Following India's recent loss in the second ODI against West Indies at Barbados, former Indian cricketer, Aakash Chopra has expressed apprehension over the team's decision-making and readiness leading up to ICC  World Cup 2023.

Aakash Chopra challenges India's planning for World Cup 2023

The defeat highlighted the team's struggle to identify their best playing XI, with only a few matches remaining before the mega event.

Chopra’s concerns come on the back of India's elimination in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. The lead-up to the tournament was marred by dubious decisions from the management, which arguably hindered India's performance. The series of questionable choices continued to extend India's drought for an ICC trophy since 2013.

Vocal about his worries, Chopra mentioned on his YouTube channel that the current pattern clearly reminds him of the flawed strategies leading to the T20 World Cup 2022 failure.

It feels like the debacle of the 2022 T20 World Cup is repeating now. That is my big worry,” said Chopra.

In the ongoing ODI series against West Indies, Ishan Kishan has been opening the batting for India, scoring half-centuries in both matches.

However, Chopra voiced disagreement with the possibility of altering the batting order to create a left-hand-right-hand opening pair for World Cup 2023. He expressed surprise at the thought of Kishan and Shubman Gill opening, with Rohit Sharma moving down the order.

“Ishan Kishan is unlikely to open the batting at the WC. I'll be really surprised if Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill open the batting and Rohit drops down to the middle order. I don't agree with this at all. Should Virat Kohli drop down from No. 3, again absolutely no,” concluded the erstwhile batter.

With Rohit's return to the playing XI, it remains to be seen how the team will adjust and whether they will heed Chopra's warning. The next few matches may prove critical in determining India's preparedness for the marquee event.
