England captain Ben Stokes took to Instagram to pay a stirring tribute to veteran pacer Stuart Broad, who is set to make his final appearance in Test cricket on Day 5 of the fifth Ashes 2023 match at the Kennington Oval.


Stokes commemorates Broad's final Test with emotional farewell

Broad, who has been a loyal servant of English cricket for nearly 17 years, announced his retirement at the end of play on Day 3. As he prepares to take the field for the last time, Stokes posted touching pictures that captured the duo's camaraderie on and off the field.

The first image shows Stokes embracing Broad, while the second depicts the pair laughing as they share bowling tips during a training session. 

The final picture captures a celebratory moment after a fall of a wicket. Stokes affectionately captioned the post '1 last dance,' using a dancing emoticon to spell the word 'dance.'

Broad's retirement announcement has come at a time when he has been England's best bowler in the ongoing Ashes series. The Nottingham-born pacer has taken 20 wickets in five matches at an average of 28.90. He is also the only England pacer to have played all games of Ashes 2023.

Having recently surpassed Ian Botham's tally for the most dismissals in the Ashes by an Englishman, Broad stands as the fifth-highest wicket-taker (602) in Tests. Playing under Stokes since June last year, Broad has been an integral part of the team's successes.

The home team will be looking to give Broad a victorious sayonara in the last Test of his glorious career. A victory would also tie the five-match series 2-2 and preserve England's unbeaten home record against Australia since 2001.

As Day 5 looms, with Australia at 135 without any loss, chasing 384, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to a series that has been marked by both intense competition and an emotional farewell to one of England's cricketing greats.
