The IPL 2023 season, as expected, was a financial and a sporting success for BCCI and fans of the sport alike. The competition featured numerous tight finishes and a befitting finale at the end of its run.

Amidst much euphoria and on-field excellence, the tournament did leave one bitter memory for the entire cricketing fraternity, especially its Indian contingent.

The moment occurred when RCB zealot Virat Kohli was involved in a verbal tussle with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) coach Gautam Gambhir after their final-over thriller at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev recently expressed his views over the incident, and claimed that watching the fight between two international veterans was a painful experience for him.

Kapil Dev believes BCCI should groom players

India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev recently expressed his take over the Virat Kohli vs Gautam Gambhir saga from the IPL 2023 season. The former all-rounder claimed that watching them fight was a painful experience for him, considering both are important figures within the Indian cricketing community.

Kapil Dev described Kohli as one of the greatest batters in the world, and acknowledged cricketer-turned-politician Gambhir’s membership in the Indian Parliament. During an interview with The Week magazine, the former player added that BCCI should focus on grooming players to make them better citizens. He said:

“BCCI have to groom players to be good citizens also. What happened between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli in the IPL, it was painful to me. My two most important people - Virat Kohli, one of the top batters in the world, Gambhir is now a member of parliament. How can they behave in such a manner?”

Notably, both Kohli and Gambhir have been teammates for Team India at the top level, as well as for Delhi in domestic cricket. The two batters played a crucial role in securing the 2011 World Cup for their country.
