India’s young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who has steadily grown into a near-regular in the Test squad, reflected on his cricketing journey and how representing the national side has shaped him into a better version of himself.

Currently part of the India A squad for the ongoing Test series against Australia A, Dhruv Jurel played a crucial knock of 140 off 197 balls in the opening match. Though his innings could not secure a win, it was instrumental in helping India settle for a draw.

Jurel Voices Gratitude For India Chance

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Jurel underlined the confidence he has gained from such performances, even if consistent opportunities in the playing XI have not always come his way.

"Honestly, earlier it did matter to me whether my score was 100 or 150. But now I understand that the team's victory is more important. Staying with or around the (India) team definitely gives you confidence. I consider myself very lucky and privileged that I got the chance to play Tests for India and to be with the team. Even if you are not playing, when seniors are around. you learn so many things from them. In a country of billions, how many people get this opportunity?" Jurel said.

He spoke about his childhood dream of donning the India Test cap and the hard work that took him there, from hours of practice on cement wickets to gradually earning his place in the national side.

"I come from a small city, Agra. It feels really good that I could make my parents and the people there proud. Where I come from, there wasn't even a proper wicket. I practiced on a cement wicket. So people there should feel that no matter where you come from, you can still make it, as long as you work hard with a true heart," Jurel added.

Jurel Optimistic With Future Prospects

With Rishabh Pant nursing a foot injury, Jurel could be in contention for India’s upcoming Test series against the West Indies next month. Expressing positivity about the future, he said he remains focused on contributing whenever the chance arises.

"I take it one match at a time, and don't think too far ahead. The more you think, the more pressure you put on yourself. Right now, I played a match today, and three days later, the next match (against Australia A) is there. So, I am only thinking about the next match, and only after that will I look further," Jurel concluded.

Notably, Jurel’s numbers have shown a marked rise since breaking into Test cricket. While his first-class average stood at 46 before his debut, it has now climbed to over 54, with one century and seven fifties across 18 innings.

His record also includes standout knocks for India A and a fluent 93 for Rest of India against Mumbai in last season’s Irani Cup.
