In what was expected to be a routine clash against Oman in the 2025 Asia Cup, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson stole the spotlight with a stellar performance, making history in the process. Samson scored a quick 56 off just 45 balls, guiding India to a competitive total of 188 which also helped the Rajasthan Royals skipper break multiple records.
Sanju Samson Breaks Multiple Records!
The 56-run knock helped Sanju Samson achieve multiple milestones. He became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to win three Player of the Match awards in T20Is and also the first to score a fifty in a T20 Asia Cup for India.
Why it becomes more significant is because having been in doubt for selection earlier in the tournament, Samson not only cemented his spot in India’s playing XI for the third game but also etched his name in T20I history with a record-breaking performance and yet another Player of the Match award.
India Stumble Against Weaker Oman
While India were heavy favourites, their innings faced hurdles from Oman’s disciplined bowling attack. Faizal Shah, along with Aamir Kaleem and Jiten Ramanandi, picked up crucial wickets and effected two run-outs, leaving India 8 down. Contributions from Abhishek Sharma (38 off 15), Tilak Verma (29), and Aksar Patel (26) were key to setting a defendable total.
In response, Oman showed intent with strong efforts from Hammad Mirza and Aamir Kaleem, but fell short by 21 runs, finishing on 167. Controlled bowling from Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana ensured India held their nerve in the dead rubber.
With Oman now officially out of the tournament and India in the Super Four, all eyes will be on the India vs Pakistan clash on September 21, which announces a rematch between the teams after the September 14 clash.
