Year 2023 has been a terrific one for Shubman Gill, however, post the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, the batter's form across formats has dropped considerably.

In the ongoing two-Test series against South Africa, Gill, who has been slotted as India's new No. 3 replacing Cheteshwar Pujara, had any not so memorable outing in the Centurion encounter, which concluded on Thursday.

Gill managed just 28 runs in two innings, which include two in the first and 26 in the second, where India lost by an innings and 32 runs. The wicketkeeper-batter has sounded alarm bells for the youngster, who has failed to make a mark in Tests.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik pointed out that if Gill remains underperforming his place on the Test side is in danger, given his not-to-impressive average.

Here's what Karthik said

"Shubman Gill is the big question mark here. He has not lived up to the expectations that people have. I think even he would be aware that if you are going to average mid-30s or early-30s after having played 20 Tests, then you would consider yourself to be a bit lucky to be around. His place will definitely be under the scanner if he doesn't have a great Test match in the next one."

The current Royal Challengers Bangalore player also urged Indian management to field specialist middle-order batters in Tests like either Sarfaraz Khan or Rajat Patidar, who have excelled in First-Class cricket.

The second and final Test starts on January 3 in Cape Town.
