Connah's Quay Cricket Club in Flintshire has been left disheartened following a destructive incident involving an off-road bike that severely damaged the club's ground. Club chairman Nick Pratt revealed how respected groundsman Dave Jones's entire life's work is ruined in the incident.
Flintshire is a county in Wales which shares its cricket board with England. Cricket is a massively followed sport in that part of the world and hence, several small clubs host local community games and charity events.
Bill Quay cricket club is a popular community club situated in Flintshire, Wales. However, a few bikers around the region caused menace and left a trail of destruction on the well-managed ground.
Off-road bikers destroys community cricket club
As reported by Leader Live, a few off-road bikers barged into the ground on Tuesday evening and destroyed the wet outfield. They left 70-80 metres deep tyre marks and ran away before security could catch them.
Club chairman Nick Pratt revealed that club members are deeply devastated with the incident, especially senior groundsman Dave Jones. He spent all his life setting up the field and the destruction was almost irreparable. 5 minutes of bikers 'fun' cost Jones his 50 years of hard work.
"We have them on CCTV coming down the bank from the navy club and then on to the outfield. They've left a trail of destruction, about 70-80 metres of deep tyre marks as the ground is wet. We're absolutely devastated, especially our groundsman, Dave Jones. Dave is an absolute legend at the club and has been doing the ground for 50 years. He's made our ground one of the best in Wales to play cricket on," Pratt said.
Nick Pratt added that just recently, the Quay Cricket Club raised 5,000 pounds through a five-a-side cricket tournament for a cancer charity. They also started a book club to support the community. However, to get this destruction in return is truly a heartbreaking sign for Pratt.
"They've only been on there five minutes but in that time they've ruined Dave's life's work. He is absolutely gutted. The other day he said he was unsure if it is repairable. Thankfully it is, but it's going to be a massive job."
The chairman lastly called for a permanent solution to the off-road bikers problem as it has caused a lot of inconvenience to the neighbourhood.
