Team India gained a handy batting advantage on Day 2 courtesy of sublime half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja further plummeted New Zealand in the final two sessions to confirm India’s dominant day out at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Here’s the timeline of how IND vs NZ panned out in Mumbai:

IND vs NZ Highlights: Gill, Pant 50s Take India Ahead But Ajaz Limits NZ Deficit

After India’s late eight-ball horror from Day 1, overnight batters Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant defied New Zealand’s spin attack with a 96-run partnership for the fifth wicket on the second morning. Pant punched out 60 of those runs from just 59 deliveries with eight alluring boundaries and two sixes before he was trapped in front by Ish Sodhi.

Glenn Phillips accounted for the wicket of a threatening Ravindra Jadeja, all while Shubman Gill was approaching a well-deserved century at the other end. Unfortunately for the hosts, Gill had his batting defiance curtailed at 90 runs by Ajaz Patel.

Washington Sundar (38* off 36) and the rest of the tail helped India gain a handy lead but Ajaz (5-103) mopped up three of the final four wickets on offer to claim a sensational five-fer. Team India had its entire innings enveloped for 263 in 59.4 overs to find themselves 28 runs ahead of New Zealand at the halfway stage of the match.

IND vs NZ Highlights: New Ball Attack Jolts New Zealand Top-Order

Indian seamer Akash Deep knocked over New Zealand captain and opening batter Tom Latham for just one in the opening over of the innings. Devon Conway, alongside Will Young, steered New Zealand past their 28-run deficit before the former was deceived by Washington Sundar.

Rachin Ravindra (4 off 3) and Daryl Mitchell (21 off 44) failed to make sizeable impacts as the two middle-order batters were dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja respectively. Tom Blundell was also knocked over by Jadeja as New Zealand crashed to 100-5 in less than 30 overs.

IND vs NZ Highlights: Ashwin, Jadeja All-Star As NZ Lose Nine By Stumps

Will Young crafted 51 runs from 100 balls to notch up his second half-century of the match. His innings also extended New Zealand’s total till the 150-run mark. However, Young did so while constantly losing partners at the other end to Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

The number three batter himself had his batting defiance curtailed by Ashwin courtesy of a sharp caught-and-bowled at 150-8.

Jadeja picked up his fourth wicket of the innings in the final few moments of the day in the form of number nine Matt Henry as New Zealand reached 171-9 from 43.3 overs by stumps.

Ajaz Patel (7*) will now resume the New Zealand innings on Day 3 alongside number 11 William O’Rourke, with a lead of 143 runs in the bank.
