Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has launched a scathing attack on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Karnataka state government following the deadly stampede during the team's victory parade on June 4.
The tragic incident outside Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, celebrating RCB's maiden IPL title win, resulted in eleven deaths and numerous injuries after massive, unmanaged crowds overwhelmed the event.
Lalit Modi Asks Management To Take Responsibility
Modi expressed deep sorrow but placed blame squarely on poor organisation and negligence. He argued the parade should never have proceeded without adequate safety measures.
“First and foremost, my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. This should never have happened. The entire event was poorly planned and executed,” Modi told IANS.
Modi further added while exclusively speaking to IANS that both authorities and RCB failed to manage such a huge crowd which could have been avoided if the event was not to be held.
“There is so much mudslinging and finger pointing going on but the issue is simple, the event should never have been allowed without proper arrangements in place. The authorities failed and the team management should also have ensured fan safety before participating in the so-called celebrations,” Modi added.
Modi was particularly critical of RCB's responsibility towards its supporters, emphasizing the fans' loyalty.
“The poor fans who died or were injured were simply passionate about the game and their team. They deserved better. This tragedy will haunt the RCB franchise and the players involved in the celebrations forever. Mark my words – even one death or injury is unacceptable. Heads must roll,” Modi said.
He also condemned the Karnataka government's role, “The value of life and well-being of fans must be paramount. But sadly, it seems no one really cares. The government should have done far more to ensure the event was organised safely. We have seen major events across India handled successfully, why not this one?”
Notably, in the most recent development, The Karnataka High Court granted interim relief to RCB and DNA Entertainment in the Bengaluru stampede case, deferring police action until June 12. Both parties denied wrongdoing, arguing the allegations were collective and lacked individual basis.
