In a tournament where spinners and batters ruled roost, India's Mohammed Shami made heads turn in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Shami having played just seven matches, finished the World Cup as the leading wicket-taker with 24 and has been praised by India's bowling coach Paras Mhambrey. The 33-year-old was drafted into the playing XI after an unfortunate injury ruled all-rounder Hardik Pandya out of the competition after the Bangladesh encounter.

As quoted by Sportskeeda, Mhambrey claimed that Shami's performance in the World Cup was not expected and that the pacer always had a positive impact on the game.

Here's what Mhambrey said

"He (Shami) was incredible. He hadn't played the initial games, but the way he came back and bowled throughout the tournament was incredible. That's not something we expected, but we always knew that he always has that positive impact on the game. He has been phenomenal."

The seam bowler claimed as many as three five-wicket hauls, which include a seven-fer in the semi-final against New Zealand at Wankhede.

Mhambrey further stated the Indian management will have to preserve pacers moving forward, given their tight schedule, with seven Tests coming up until March.

"We will have to be very smart with the way we go forward in terms of managing the workload. These guys have played a lot of cricket, so we need to see how we want to go about it. We haven't discussed it yet,”

Meanwhile, Shami has been excluded from India's upcoming T20I series against Australia, along with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
