'He Might Not Be The Usual Rishabh Pant,' Gavaskar's Bold Remark On DC Star Before IPL 2024

Sunil Gavaskar threw caution to the wind of excitement amongst the fans over star Indian wicketkeeper-batter and Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant's potential return to competitive cricket via the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The India and DC match-winning cricketer, who had suffered a near-fatal car accident in December 2022, has since undergone a sustained recovery phase following multiple surgeries on his body and is reportedly tipped to turn out for the Capitals as a specialist batter

However, one of Pant's great admirers, legendary former batter Sunil Gavaskar, believes neither the cricketer nor the fans should keep their immediate expectations too high with the swashbuckling left-hander since he would be underprepared when he does walk out to bat and lead DC in IPL 2024.

Gavaskar On Pant's Potential IPL 2024 Comeback

Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar said since his knee was the most ravaged part of the body following the life-threatening car crash, Pant's batting may be affected in the initial games upon his return to Delhi colours.

"Knee plays a pivotal role in batting as well as keeping -- which of course he may not do initially. Maybe he won't be the usual Rishabh Pant that we are used to seeing. He certainly has the ability to think on his feet," the former India captain said.

"If he gets back to full fitness, the reins of (Delhi Capitals) captaincy should be handed over to him. Let's stay hopeful. This season is first of him coming back to full fitness. Let's not rush him into doing something that there will be a setback," he added.

The likelihood of Pant's comeback was first indicated by Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting, who said the franchise would be keen to have their leader and player around after missing his services during IPL 2023. However, if Pant can't make it to the IPL 2024, Delhi will retain opener David Warner as their captain.
