Former India fast bowler RP Singh has expressed his support for Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer as potential contenders for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023, scheduled for October and November in India. With several players facing injuries or struggling with form in the middle order, India is keen on finding strong performers to secure their spot in the tournament.

Suryakumar has proven himself to be a formidable force in T20I cricket, holding the top-ranking position for T20I batters. However, he has yet to replicate the same brilliance in the ODIs.

Since making his ODI debut in July 2021, Surya has played 24 matches, accumulating 452 runs at an average of 23.79 with a strike rate of 100.67, including a couple of fifties.

RP Singh, speaking at a JioCinema event, expressed his belief in both SKY and Iyer's abilities to perform well in the middle order for India during the World Cup. He considered Surya a strong candidate for No. 4, and if needed, as a backup option, emphasized the importance of providing him with sufficient game-time.

"Suryakumar Yadav is a good option for No 4, along with Shreyas (Iyer), provided he is fit. But if you are looking at him even as a backup option, it is important to give him game-time and he is certainly a good pick," RP Singh said during an interaction held by Jio Cinema.

Although Suryakumar is yet to make a significant impact in ODI cricket, RP praised his batting style and considered him a potential choice for number 4 or 5 in the batting order.

"Suryakumar is yet to make his mark in One-day cricket but the way he is batting, and the kind of batter that he is, he can be a good option for No 4 or 5," added RP Singh.

In the series opener against the West Indies, Suryakumar struggled, managing only 19 runs off 25 balls. Coming to bat at number three in a chase of 115, he couldn't finish off the game as left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie eventually dismissed him.

As India prepares for the upcoming 50-over World Cup, the team management will be closely monitoring Suryakumar's performances, hoping he can prove his worth in the middle order and contribute significantly to India's success in the tournament.
