Australia secured a narrow 12-run lead over England at the end of the second day in the fifth Ashes Test, as their batting lineup crumbled, with Steve Smith being the standout performer once again.

Smith played a well-compiled knock of 71 runs off 123 balls which could have been much shorter had the luck not been on his side.

The incident occurred in the 78th over of the inning bowled by Chris Woakes when Smith worked the ball towards mid-wicket and looked for a double.

England's substitute fielder George Ealham was quick to collect the ball as he threw it towards wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who hit the stumps with Smith diving as England immediately began celebrating the run-out.

The Australian batter looked certain of his dismissal and started walking back to the pavilion. However, after a thorough review, third Umpire Nitin Menon concluded that Bairstow's glove had caused the bails to dislodge before he collected the ball, and Smith had made it inside the crease just in time.

The decision made by Nitin Menon has garnered high praise on social media. Joining the chorus of supporters, star India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin also extended his appreciation for Menon's right decision. Taking to Twitter, Ashwin wrote:

“What’s with the Ashes and substitute fielders? Have to applaud Nitin Menon for making the right decision.”

When the incident happened, Smith was batting on 44 off 85. He later added 27 more runs, reaching 71 off 123 before being dismissed by Woakes.

Following his contribution, Todd Murphy launched a counter-attack, scoring a brisk 34 off 39 balls with two fours and three sixes. Eventually, Australia was all out for 295 in reply to England's first innings total of 283 runs.
