During the final Ashes 2023 Test match at the Oval, England's all-rounder Moeen Ali suffered a groin injury while batting on Day 1. As a result, he will not participate on Day 2 and is under the observation of England's medical team.

The injury occurred in the afternoon session of Day 1 when Moeen felt discomfort after taking a single in the 30th over. He received immediate medical attention and even took painkillers to continue his batting.

Prior to the injury, Moeen was batting at 11 runs off 37 balls, but he bravely decided to accelerate his innings, scoring 23 runs off the next nine balls before eventually getting out at 34.

Moeen has had a series marred by injuries, having previously bruised his finger earlier in the ongoing series, and this latest groin injury could potentially rule him out of the match.

There is a possibility that the all-rounder might not be able to bowl in the fifth Ashes Test, putting pressure on England to seek spin assistance from their captain, Joe Root. England's skipper Ben Stokes is already unable to bowl in the match due to knee problems. Despite this setback, England has four other pacers.

At the time of writing, Australia are 75 for 1 in their first innings, with Usman Khawaja batting at 33*.
