In the 28th match of The Hundred 2024 between Trent Rockets and Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Tim Southee made a significant impact early on.

After Birmingham Phoenix won the toss and chose to bowl, the New Zealand star, playing for Phoenix, struck gold by removing Trent Rockets’ wicket-keeper batter, Tom Banton, for a mere 5 runs off 7 balls.

The breakthrough came on the 9th ball of Trent Rockets’ innings. Southee, bowling his first set, delivered a beautifully pitched-up ball that swung into Banton’s pads after pitching. Banton, aiming to flick the ball to the on-side, misjudged the line and was struck on the front pad.

The umpire wasted no time in raising his finger for an LBW, and after a brief discussion with his partner, Banton chose not to review the decision, walking back to the pavilion.

This early wicket was crucial for Birmingham Phoenix, as Tim Southee’s precision and experience shone through, giving his team the upper hand. Southee didn’t stop there; he struck again shortly after, dismissing Joe Root to leave Trent Rockets reeling at 22 for 3 after just 29 balls.
