'He Actually Twinged His Back'-McCullum Reveals Robinson Was Hurt While Batting In Ranchi

Amidst criticism faced by comeback pacer Ollie Robinson for a disappointing outing with the ball in the Ranchi Test, England head coach Brendon McCullum revealed the tall seamer had twinged his back" while batting in the first-innings against India.

Robinson, who was playing his first first-class game since July after overcoming his latest injury troubles, played a superb knock of 58 in a great partnership with centurion Joe Root to extend England's first-innings total to an imposing 353 after walking in at 245/7.

However, the pacer failed miserably in his primary skill on return and conceded 0/54 off his 13 lacklustre overs, which helped Indian batters regain control of the proceedings at his end and ultimately close in on the England total. Something that would've disappointed the England camp since Robinson's height and tall release were expected to suit the cracked-up pitch perfectly.

McCullum Reveals Robinson Injury Amidst Criticism

Robinson's painstaking and costly burst in the first half of the Test match meant he inspired little confidence in his skipper Ben Stokes as he wasn't handed the ball during the Indian run-chase where the hosts reached home with five wickets intact.

However, coach McCullum has now revealed his comeback fast-bowler had dealt with a back issue after batting for a long time in the first-innings.

"He actually twinged his back while batting in the first innings, which is why in those initial couple of spells, he was down on pace," McCullum was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo, expressing sympathy with his pacer while revealing he is the most disappointed with himself after the Ranchi performance.

"Robinson has been the most disappointed person. For one reason or another, it didn't quite work out for him, and obviously, he's not just as disappointed as everyone else, he's the most disappointed out of everyone," he added.

Robinson couldn't make the side for the third three Tests and had replaced rested pacer Mark Wood for the fourth Test in Ranchi. His fresh fitness concern now raise doubts on his participation for the fifth and final Test of the tour in Dharamshala, starting March 7.
