In the thrilling third T20I between India and Sri Lanka at Pallekele, India secured a series whitewash and Washington Sundar heaped praise on the bold and unconventional captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav.

After both teams scored 137/8, Suryakumar's strategic decisions shone through in the final moments of the match.

With Sri Lanka needing just 9 runs off the last two overs, captain Suryakumar handed the penultimate over to Rinku Singh and took the responsibility of the final over himself. He successfully prevented Sri Lanka from surpassing India's score and forcing a Super Over.

Washington Sundar Praised Suryakumar Yadav's Approach As A Leader

In the Super Over, Suryakumar opted for spin over pace by choosing Washington Sundar to bowl. Sundar performed an exceptional performance as he conceded only two runs and took two wickets, setting the stage for a quick chase. Suryakumar then sealed the win with a boundary off the first ball of India's Super Over.

Sundar stated that when he was given the responsibility to bowl the super over he was happy that the captain showed faith in him and that he could perform well for his country.

"Honestly, I had no idea I was going to bowl. It was after the batsmen walked out that Surya turned behind and said: 'Washy, you're on.' I was very happy, to be honest. I thought it was a great opportunity for me to step up and win games for my country. Thank God it went well,” Sundar said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo

Washington Sundar also praised Suryakumar's "big heart" as a leader, which highlighted the captain's fearless approach and tactical acumen.

"It was amazing from Surya and his leadership skills. I think he felt given the situation if he bowled more spinners we'd have a good chance to win the game. We all know he has a big heart when he goes out there to bat, but he also has a big heart in leadership as well,” said Sundar.

After winning the T20I series against Sri Lanka under the debut assignments for Gautam Gambhir as head coach and Suryakumar Yadav as captain.

Now the 'Men in Blue' will face the same opposition in a three-match ODI series. However, for the ODI series, Rohit Sharma will take over as captain, bringing his experience to the 50-over format.
