Afghanistan showed their mettle in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024 by qualifying for the semis, and have been playing consistent cricket across formats for quite some years now. Their stature in world cricket has surely gone up, and another step in that direction is now their first bilateral series against South Africa which the Afghans will host in Sharjah.

It will be a three-match ODI series starting on 18th of September and though it was not part of the FTP as confirmed by ACB chairman, the addition of the series will surely help both teams in their preparation for the Champions Trophy 2025.

South Africa and Afghanistan have only played two ODIs against each other so far. Firstly in the 2019 World Cup and secondly in the 2023 World Cup while their most recent encounter came in the shortest format when they clashed in the semis of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
