Jasprit Bumrah spearheaded India's bowling effort with a stunning five-wicket haul (5/82) to dismiss England for 465 in the first Test at Headingley. His relentless spell secured India a slender first-innings lead just before tea on the third day, reaffirming his status as India's premier fast bowler.
This was Bumrah's 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, achieved despite minimal support from fellow seamers and dropped catches off his bowling on Day 2. On his special performance, Dinesh Karthik lauded Bumrah and appreciated the record-breaking spell.
Karthik Compares Bumrah To Kohinoor!
Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, speaking to Sky Cricket, hailed Jasprit Bumrah's immense value.
"He is as valuable as the Kohinoor diamond. I hope people realise how important he is to the team across formats. He will make it work regardless of formats, bowling phase and any kind of ball. But more importantly, he has got the brain that knows what the batter is trying to do and he has got that wired very nicely," Karthik added.
Dinesh Karthik further emphasized Bumrah's exceptional record. "In the history of the game, for any bowler who has picked more than 200 wickets, he has the best average and that tells you he is something very special," Karthik concluded.
Bumrah Stands Tall Amidst Challenges
Bumrah's performance was critical. The other Indian seamers – Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna – combined took only three wickets while conceding 288 runs on a surface offering little assistance. Bumrah's impact and efficiency stood in stark contrast, especially after seeing three catches dropped off his bowling on the previous day.
England's innings featured a fighting 99 from Harry Brook, who shared significant partnerships with debutant Jamie Smith (40) and Chris Woakes (38). However, Bumrah's timely breakthroughs proved decisive in restricting their total.
Historic Numbers For Jasprit Bumrah!
Bumrah's haul also marked his 12th five-wicket haul in away Tests, equalling the legendary Kapil Dev's tally. He achieved this feat in just 34 matches compared to Kapil Dev's 66. Most significantly, his Test bowling average of 19.33 is the best among all 86 bowlers in history who have taken 200 or more wickets.
