India's head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about the chances of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma participating in the 2027 cricket World Cup. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma made it into India's ODI squad for the tour of Australia, where the Men in Blue will take on the home side in three 50-over contests. After India's clinical win over West Indies in the Delhi Test, head coach Gautam Gambhir shared key insights into the future of the veteran duo in ODIs.

Gambhir comments on Rohit, Kohli's World Cup participation

India had a memorable day on the field, defeating West Indies convincingly on day 5 of the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Chasing a paltry 121-run target, India went past the finish line in the 36th over, with KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel remaining unbeaten in the middle. After the hosts' emphatic series victory, Gautam Gambhir attended the post-match press conference, providing valuable insights on the participation of Rohit and Kohli in the 2027 World Cup.

Rohit and Kohli, two of the greatest Indian players in modern-day cricket, are at the fag end of their respective careers. While the BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar has said that both these players are not committed to play the 2027 World Cup, several reports have claimed that Rohit and Kohli have been asked to play the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier domestic One-Day competition, to stay match-ready and in contention for the marquee event in South Africa.

Amid the uncertainty over their participation in the World Cup, Gambhir has stated that the tournament is still two and a half years away; so, it's essential for Kohli and Rohit to focus on the upcoming Australia tour. Speaking to the media, Gambhir addressed Kohli and Rohit as quality players, hoping for their success in the three-match series Down Under.

"ODI World Cup is two and a half years away. It is important to stay in the present. They both are quality players. Hopefully those two will have a successful tour," Gambhir told the media in the post-match press conference.

It's worth mentioning that despite retiring from Tests and T20Is, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still active players in ODI cricket. So, the upcoming Australia tour gives them a golden opportunity to prove that they still have the hunger to score runs and win matches for India and keep themselves in contention for the World Cup amid the rise of youngsters like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
