India’s left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was not given an opportunity to debut in the Test during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy despite being a lethal weapon in white-ball formats. His coach, Gagandeep Singh, has now revealed that Arshdeep grew restless during the tour.
Arshdeep had been a key part of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, where he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker. But when it comes to red-ball cricket, he is still waiting for his big moment, and the delay has tested his patience.
Gagandeep Singh Advised Arshdeep To Work Harder
Interestingly, Arshdeep Singh was set to make his Test debut in England during the 5-game Test series, but fate had other plans. He suffered a left thumb injury before the fourth Test in Manchester, which ruled him out.
By the time he recovered for the fifth Test at The Oval, the team management chose not to play him. That decision left the 26-year-old restless.
Punjab’s bowling coach Gagandeep Singh, who has closely worked with Arshdeep, admitted to the media that the pacer grew a little impatient during the England series.
"A few months ago when he was in England, I spoke to him. He was getting impatient that he was not getting a chance. I just told him, ‘You’ve to wait for your time’. I think they should’ve played him in England because he’s a swing bowler and he’s tall, everything’s good. I don’t know the team combinations, probably the coach (Gautam Gambhir) and captain (Shubman Gill) weren’t confident about him,” Gagandeep said.
According to Gagandeep, Arshdeep Singh has to sharpen his basics and work harder to break into the Test team.
"He can be a better bowler with more swing and more accuracy. I haven’t seen him in the last few months, but hopefully when I do, I can assess him better. From the recent matches that I have observed, he can work more on line and length, yorker balls, and especially bouncers, which are the more effective deliveries in international cricket," he added.
Arshdeep Singh To Feature In Duleep Trophy Next
Before the Asia Cup 2025 assignment, Arshdeep Singh will feature in the first-class domestic tournament, the Duleep Trophy 2025. Drafted into the North Zone squad, Singh will have an opportunity to sharpen his skills with the red ball.
The Duleep Trophy will begin on August 28, and the final will be held on September 11. However, Arshdeep, along with many senior cricketers, will fly to the UAE midway for the Asia Cup, which begins on September 09.
