India’s T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, is confident that Ruturaj Gaikwad will soon be back in the national team. Speaking before India’s T20I series opener against South Africa, Suryakumar praised the 27-year-old’s consistent performances across formats. Even though Gaikwad isn’t part of the T20I squad for this series, Suryakumar believes it’s only a matter of time before he’s back.

Suryakumar Backs Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Return to Team India Soon

In the press conference, Suryakumar Yadav didn’t hold back on his praise.

"Ruturaj is a fantastic player. He has been fantastic and consistent across all formats he plays...There are a lot of players who have been performing well even before him, so there is a routine or process that I think that the management has come up with, so it is important to follow that. He has been performing consistently well, so I believe his time will come soon,” said Surya.

Gaikwad’s consistent performances in both domestic cricket and his few international outings have clearly left a massive mark. According to Surya, the CSK captain’s form is too good to ignore and he’s sure to get his chance soon.

Despite being left out of the T20I squad against South Africa and the Test squad for the Australia series, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been lighting up the domestic circuit, as well as the IPL.

In the Zimbabwe series earlier this year, he impressed too, with scores of 77* and 49. Despite this, the Ajit Agarkar led selection committee has decided to give him a pass for now.

Gaikwad Leading India A vs Australia A

Meanwhile, being sidelined from the senior team, Gaikwad is currently captaining India A in an unofficial Test series against Australia A.

Though he’s had a tough time with the bat so far, scoring 0, 5, and 4 in three innings, this experience of captaincy and playing on difficult pitches could still be valuable.

The selectors may be keeping an eye on his potential for the Test format down the line as he looks to make a comeback into the Indian team.
