Former Pakistan umpire Aleem Dar has opened up on a tragic incident early on in his umpiring career that forced him to return home from the 2003 World Cup.

Dar revealed that he had lost his seven-month-old daughter during the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, and his family hid that news from him so that he could concentrate on the World Cup.

The ex-umpire revealed that he got to know about the demise of his daughter after one of the citizens from his village gave his condolence to him.

“It was the start of my career as an ICC panel umpire and it was a very important assignment for my career and they knew if I came to know about my daughter’s demise, I would return home immediately," Dar said on a Pakistani TV show, as quoted by PTI.

"I was kept in the dark for nearly a month after her passing away and I only came to know about it by chance in Johannesburg where a Pakistani man who belonged to my hometown Sialkot came to offer his condolences to me. It was a big shock to me at that time and I immediately informed the ICC and returned home,” he added.

Dar's Umpiring Career

It is worth noting that Dar has officiated in 435 games, including four World Cup finals. After being nominated twice in 2005 and 2006, Aleem finally won the Umpire of the Year award in October 2009
