Asha Sobhana was one of the stars for the Royal Challengers Begaluru (RCB) women during the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 season. She played a pivotal role in her side's triumph as the franchise captured the WPL title this year.
The RCB women's team boasted plethora of foreign talents and they also have Indian international star in Smriti Mandhana as their leader. However, despite having generational talents, Asha Sobhana stole the limelight as she scalped 12 wickets in the 2024 WPL season and announced her arrival in style.
The WPL auction is just around the corner, with the tentative dates being in the first week of December. As the auction approaches thick and fast, RCB scout and the assistant coach of the women's team, Malolan Rangarajan, talked about how they scouted Sobhana and what goes through in bringing in a player in their team setup.
"Our camps are about more than just player evaluation—they're about building potential. By analysing current players and inviting promising talent from across the country, we form a solid team structure and boost every player’s game." This strategic approach ensures that every talent scouted has the best opportunity to grow and develop within the system, Malolan said in an exclusive with OneCricket
Sobhana scouted during state match
The second highest wicket-taker of WPL 2024, Sobhana was scouted during a state match in Nagpur, where she represented Pondicherry. RCB and Malolan's mission was to get players from every corner of India, and as a result, they sent their scouts to watch the Nagpur Vs Pondicherry match and it ended up giving them a talented player in Sobhana.
"Getting into RCB was a dream come true," Asha had shared in the RCB Bold Diary video earlier. “It was a true moment for me because my name was not added to the auction list until the last day. Being picked by a franchise like RCB was life-changing for me."
She continued, "As a cricketer, when you start playing, your dream is to represent your nation. RCB gave me a platform to perform and pursue that goal. That is the greatest thing. In that way, RCB changed my life."
The right-arm off-break bowler scalped 12 wickets in 10 matches in WPL 2024 and the champion cricketer will hope that she continues to deliver in the upcoming season as RCB have shown faith in her and have retained her.
