RCB made some interesting choices in their retention list but one decision which raised eyebrows was the exclusion of their skipper, Faf du Plessis. For the last three seasons, the former Proteas batter led RCB from the front and was their leading run-scorer.
He was their second most capped RCB skipper and in the space of just three years became their fourth highest run-getter in IPL history. However, the Red Army decided against retaining him, but they do have a choice to bring him back using the RTM card.
Du Plessis outshined Virat Kohli in his maiden season for RCB, and as a leader, he took them to two playoffs in three seasons. However, the one factor which went against du Plessis was his age. In the mega auction, every franchises try and build the team for a minimum of three years. Du Plessis is already 40-years-old and retaining him for a hefty price was not a feasible option.
Ahead of the mega auction day, the former skipper spoke on his chances of returning to RCB. He was unsure about his future, but remained optimistic as the auction approaches fast.
“You never know with auctions. You never know what’s going to happen, so everyone is excited to see what happens on November 24. I’ve got no idea what’s going to happen, so I’ll be looking.” Faf told ANI.
RCB's retention list ahead of the auction
RCB made some smart choices and retained only three players as they focused on their Indian core. The obvious choice was Virat Kohli, who was retained for INR 21 crore. The other two retentions were Rajat Patidar for 11 crore and uncapped player, Yash Dayal for 5 crore.
As a result, they have a purse of 83 crore and the team will be eager to build a strong core from it. If RCB don't go after du Plessis, they'll be targeting a captaincy material in the mega auction.
