As Australia gears up for their T20I series against Pakistan on November 14, stand-in captain Josh Inglis has addressed growing criticism over the decision to field a 'second-string' squad against Men in Green.

The backlash stems after Australia decided to rest several first-choice players ahead of the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy and go ahead with a second string squad for the T20I series.

Josh Inglis Defends Australia’s Approach Of Squad Selection

In a candid pre-match interview ahead of the first T20I in Brisbane, Inglis opened up about the criticisms and shared his thought on this matter. He defended the selection choices and stated the challenges that the team has faced in order to navigate a congested international cricket schedule.

The debate began after Australia announced the squad that missed names of crucial players  for the T20I series. This bold move taken by Australia sparked reactions from fans and critics who dubbed it an 'Australia-B' team.

However, Josh Inglis in the recent interview was quick to dismiss the notion of the squad being called second-rate, and he also stated that while the selection decisions were beyond his control.

“I don’t think it’s very fair to say that, but we know how challenging the schedule is. There’s always series overlapping where players are used (in different) formats. There are decisions to be made. That’s above my pay grade, thankfully," Inglis said ahead of the first T20I in Brisbane.

His captaincy responsibilities have come at a challenging time, especially after Australia’s recent ODI series defeat to Pakistan. Australia lost the third ODI by eight wickets that led to history for Pakistan. Inglis admitted that Australia's batting lineup fell short during the ODI series.

“Everyone’s got their methods and how they go about it. It’s just about bringing them up this week, and let’s forget about what’s happened before. Just attack it head on and keep backing yourself (but) we’ve seen how good a side this (Pakistan) team is and we don’t take any team we come against lightly,” he added.

With the first T20I set to commence in Brisbane, all eyes will be on Inglis and his squad as they look to bounce back from their ODI disappointment.
