West Indies head coach Daren Sammy was left a touch disappointed after witnessing how some Bangladesh fans turned on their own players during the third and final T20I in Chattogram on Friday. The visitors completed a 3-0 clean sweep, but Sammy’s post-match takeaway wasn’t just about cricket; it was about respect.

Sammy not pleased with crowd behaviour

As Bangladesh once again stumbled with the bat, failing to defend 151 and losing by five wickets with 19 balls to spare, frustration among home fans began to boil over. Chants of “bhua, bhua”, meaning “useless, useless”, echoed across the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Some supporters even called out individual players by name as the team’s slide continued.

Daren Sammy, curious about the chant, later learned its meaning and didn’t hold back while expressing his disappointment.

“I didn’t like how they treated their own players,” Sammy said after the match. “I think they said ‘bhua, bhua,’ and I heard what it means. When you come to support your home team, you are a fan. Every player goes there trying to do well. You should support them. But they [the crowd] are good, and I know they want their team to perform. But more support and more encouragement — it goes a long way. Do not chastise the players. To the fans: Be nice.”

Bangladesh’s struggle spark fans' frustration

It wasn’t just one bad night. Bangladesh’s batting looked out of sorts across all three games, never really getting into rhythm. Their inability to post or chase a competitive total had already irked fans, and by the third T20I, patience had run thin.

But Sammy’s message showed that cricket is a game of ups and downs, and even the best have bad days. His words carried weight, especially coming from a man who has lifted two T20 World Cups as captain and now mentors the next generation.

It is worth mentioning that Bangladesh fans are among the most passionate in world cricket: loyal, loud, and emotional. But that passion can quickly swing from cheers to jeers when things go south. The “bhua” chants were another example of how thin the line can be between support and scorn.
