Romario Shepherd bagged a hat-trick of wickets in T20I cricket, becoming only the second West Indies bowler after Jason Holder to achieve this feat. Shepherd’s heroics came in the third T20I against Bangladesh at Chattogram, where the hosts batted first and suffered a dramatic collapse in the middle and lower order.
Shepherd finds place in elite record book with hat-trick
One of the key orchestrators of this collapse was Romario Shepherd, whose hat-trick completely shattered Bangladesh’s hopes of posting a big total despite Tanzid Hasan’s strong start and an 89-run grit till the ultimate over.
Bangladesh began steadily, reaching 40 runs at the end of the powerplay. Most of their runs came during the middle overs, though they also lost three wickets in that phase. However, it was the death overs that proved disastrous. Shepherd, leading the attack, first dismissed Nurul Hasan with the last ball of the 17th over. A full-length delivery that was mistimed and caught by Rovman Powell to the left of long-on.
Returning for the 20th over, Shepherd struck immediately, removing Tanzid Hasan, the set opener, with the help of Jason Holder, who took a sharp catch at mid-off. On the very next delivery, which was also the hat-trick ball, Shepherd clean-bowled Shoriful Islam with a stunning peach delivery that sent him back for a golden duck.
West Indies lead in dead-rubber contest
At that stage, Bangladesh stood at 142, and in the last four balls, Taskin Ahmed managed to add a few runs to push the total to 151. Notably, the Caribbean side had Jason Holder and Khary Pierre contribute with the ball too, with their four wickets and Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase's one wicket each. West Indies now comes out to chase a target in a series they had already sealed 2-0.
