In a landmark event at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium during the India-New Zealand ODI World Cup 2023 semifinal, Virat Kohli achieved a historic milestone, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most centuries in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Kohli's century, his 50th in ODIs, propelled him ahead of Tendulkar's 49, marking a significant moment in cricket history.

Viv Richards slammed naysayers as Kohli overtakes Tendulkar

Kohli's achievement is part of a larger narrative of excellence, with the cricketer amassing 80 international centuries across all formats. This includes 29 centuries in Test matches and an additional hundred in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

His journey to this record was marked by a series of impressive performances, including centuries against Bangladesh and South Africa in the ongoing tournament. Notably, Kohli equalled Tendulkar’s tally earlier this month at the Eden Gardens, the very venue where Tendulkar played his final international match.

Amidst this achievement, another Tendulkar record was eclipsed by Kohli - surpassing Tendulkar's total of 673 runs, the highest in a single ODI World Cup. However, the highlight of the event was not just Kohli's performance but also the commentary by legendary cricketer Viv Richards.

Richards, a figure of authority in the cricket world, offered insightful commentary during the match. He addressed the earlier criticisms faced by Kohli, noting that some detractors had questioned Kohli's capabilities during his challenging periods.

The West Indian stalwart pointed out the lack of common sense in these criticisms, implicitly praising Kohli's resilience and skill. His comments highlighted the importance of support and belief in a player's potential, especially during tough times.

"Some people were calling for the head of Kohli when he went through tough times, common sense didn't prevail,” said Richards.

Meanwhile, India posted a commanding 397/4 in 50 overs, with Shreyas Iyer also notching up a scintillating hundred.
