With the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 just around the corner, the cricket world is buzzing with predictions, analyses, and support from former cricketers and active players alike.

One of the latest to join the conversation is Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has confidently backed India to retain the prestigious trophy in the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia. The series, set to begin on November 22, 2024, will be played in Australia.

Mohammed Shami Choose India As Favourites For BGT

Speaking at a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) event, Mohammed Shami expressed his unwavering belief in India's superiority and dismissed any notion of pressure on the Indian team.

"Favourites hum hi hai (we are the favourites)," he confidently declared when asked about India's chances in the series.

Shami further added that he believes that India has not only developed a formidable side capable of thriving in Australian conditions but also gained a crucial psychological edge over their opponents.

"Chinta unhe honi chahiye, hume nahi (They should be worried about us)," Shami remarked, signaling that the pressure is now on Australia to deliver in their home conditions.

India has claimed back-to-back series wins in Australia, with the most memorable being the historic 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where an injury-depleted Indian side defied the odds to pull off a stunning 2-1 victory.

That series marked one of the most remarkable comebacks in Test history, capped off by a win at the Gabba, a venue where Australia had remained unbeaten for 32 years.

When Will Mohammed Shami Play For India Next?

Mohammed Shami is undergoing rigorous rehabilitation to recover from a significant ankle injury suffered during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Fully aware of the gravity of his injury, Shami has made a prudent decision to make a gradual comeback to cricket.

He has indicated that he intends to prioritise rebuilding his fitness through domestic cricket before considering representing the Indian team again. It is important to note that the fast bowler is likely to feature for Bengal in Ranji Trophy.
