Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) witnessed a batting collapse against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season playoffs, and former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar criticised the team for being mindless with the batting approach, especially when they lost two in-form batters at the top.

SRH lost to KKR by 8 wickets in the Qualifier 1 stage of the IPL 2024 playoffs yesterday as Kolkata Knight Riders dominated Pat Cummins and company by chasing down 160 runs total inside 14 overs.

However, the game was lost in the first inning itself when SRH witnessed a fateful batting collapse. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, the two in-form batters and possibly the backbone of SRH’s batting lineup, were sent packing inside the first two overs.

And SRH further drowned as they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. To make matters worse, Rahul Tripathi got run out after a miscommunication with Abdul Samad just after finishing his half century.

That being said, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar slammed SRH for their mindless approach while analysing the Qualifier 1 game.

He said that SRH should have been watchful and played with caution after Head and Abhishek’s wickets. While he did not suggest missing out on scoring opportunities, going for the kill after every ball wasn’t necessarily a wise thing.

"When you've lost two wickets and the two who have been scoring runs for you, a certain amount of caution is required. Sure, don't miss out on scoring opportunities, but don't look to throw your bat at everything. That's what we saw," Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar added that the lower order has no business taking the team to 200 runs total when a team plummets to 39/4 inside the powerplay.

"They lost those four wickets, and losing four top batters means you can't really expect numbers five, six, seven, eight, and nine to get you to 200. So, that is where they may have lost it. But full credit to Kolkata for the way they attacked and took advantage of that pitch as well,” he added.

Regardless, SRH will still have a chance to redeem themselves in Qualifier 2, where they will meet the winners of the Eliminator contest between RR and RCB.
