In a recent development shaking the cricketing world, the BCCI decided not to include Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan in their annual central contracts. The move follows their absence from domestic cricket despite being available for selection.

Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg, known for his expertise as a left-arm wrist spin bowler and his stint representing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, expressed his views on the matter, emphasising the importance of prioritising domestic cricket.

In a YouTube video, Hogg stated,

"If you have time to play domestic cricket, you have to do that. For Iyer, You cannot simply go out and practice using your franchise team. You must return to the state team."

Iyer, currently the captain of KKR in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was criticised for not playing for his state team Mumbai after being dropped from the Indian Test squad.

Hogg emphasised the necessity for players to participate in domestic cricket when not on international duty, except for rare cases like Virat Kohli, who requires rest due to extensive cricketing commitments.

Similarly, Ishan Kishan, who also missed out on the central contract, faced scrutiny for his absence from Jharkhand's Ranji Trophy matches. Kishan had taken a personal break during the South Africa tour but returned to action in the DY Patil T20 tournament.

While some former players, such as Kapil Dev and Madan Lal, supported the BCCI's decision, others, like Sourav Ganguly, expressed surprise.

The exclusion of Iyer and Kishan from the contract list underscores the significance of consistent domestic and IPL cricket performances. Both players, with their youth and talent, have an opportunity to regain national selection by delivering strong performances in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

After the contract snub, Shreyas Iyer played the Ranji Trophy 2024 semi-final for his state team against Tamil Nadu, raising anticipation about his participation in the final against Vidarbha on March 10th.
