The Ashes 2025 might be a month away, but the entire Australian team will have their eyes set on the upcoming India ODI series, and more so on two of their best players - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The two batters have always tormented the Australian attack, and despite being in the twilight of their career, the two batters will still hold the key.

BCCI vice-president refutes RO-KO retirement rumours

However, even before the series commenced, speculations had begun regarding the potential ODI retirement of both Rohit and Kohli. The duo was urged to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy for future ODI team selections as chief selector, Ajit Agarkar is unsure about having the duo in the long-term plan.

Interestingly, both the legends want to be a part of the India squad for the World Cup 2027, but their position is not guaranteed as the management reportedly wants to move on from them. However, before the Australia ODIs, BCCI vice-president, Rajiv Shukla quashed all retirement rumours, and gave a verdict that Kohli, and Rohit are in the ODI scheme of things.

"It is going to benefit us a lot. They are great batsmen. We will succeed in defeating Australia with them in the team. It is absolutely wrong to say that this is their last ODI series. It depends on the players as to when they have to retire," he told ANI in Delhi.

R0-KO's future revealed by coach Gambhir

After India thrashed West Indies to win the Test series, head coach of the side, Gautam Gambhir, was asked about Rohit and Virat’s ODI future, and he indirectly stated that there is enough time left to decide their fate.

"Look, 50-over World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away, and I think it is very important to stay in the present," he said in a press conference after India beat West Indies 2-0 in their Test series. "That is very important. Obviously, they are quality players, they are coming back, their experience is going to be a handful in Australia as well. Hopefully, those two guys will have a successful tour, and more importantly, as a team, we will have a successful series."

Both the former ODI skippers will play under youngster Shubman Gill, and will need to deliver the goods to stay relevant in the ODI scheme of things.
