Much to the surprise of the cricket fans, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been dropped from the latest ODI rankings. The absence of the two players has taken the cricket world by surprise.

Notably, in the ranking that came out on August 13, 2025, Rohit Sharma jumped up to the second rank in ODIs. Virat Kohli was in the fourth spot in the same list. But the sudden exclusion of the two players from the list has made the fans dread the forbidden - Have the two legends retired from ODI cricket, too?

ICC's Rule Of Dropping Players

As per the ICC's ranking rule, if a player is not playing in ODIs for more than 9-12 months, he or she gets excluded from the list. However, both Kohli and Rohit played their last ODI in ICC Champions Trophy. The date being March 9, 2025, it has been only five months and hence there is no way that the spell of inactivity has resulted in their exclusion from the ranking list.

The Recent Discussions Around The Retirement Of Kohli And Rohit

While both Kohli and Rohit have expressed their intention of being a part of the Indian squad in the 2027 ODI WC, there has been rumours that BCCI is not seeing them as a part of their plans in that tournament.

Notably, both these legends have drawn curtains over their T20I and Test careers. It was a move that was taken to elongate their respective ODI careers. However, after watching the recent performance of the next generation in the England tour, the management has felt that it is time to move ahead even in the ODIs. Thus these reports claimed that BCCI has communicated this deicision to Rohit and Kohli and given them the ultimatum to hang up their boots.

The recent exclusion has fired up the speculation that BCCI might have communicated the move regarding Kohli and Rohit to ICC and hence the exclusion from ranking. Although, there has been no official announcement from any party, the dreaded move is being feared by the fans since the ranking has come out.
