Stuart Broad vs Australia (Source: @mufaddal_vohra/X.com)
Although the series between England and India is ongoing, the attention during the fifth Test briefly shifted to the upcoming Ashes series Down Under. Former English cricketer Stuart Broad was on commentary when a hilarious moment transpired.
Broad Admits To Cheating In A Hilarious Manner
It all happened during the second day of the fifth Test between England and India at the Oval, when former English captain Michael Atherton, while commentating for Sky Sports Cricket, touched upon the topic of Stuart Broad signing a contract with Australia's Channel 7 for the upcoming Ashes series, which is set to be played Down Under later this year.
Speaking on the topic, Atherton claimed that the Australian publications, "The West Australian" and the "Brisbane Courier Mail", took a punt at Broad for cheating during the Ashes, as they called for the ban of the former English pacer, labelling him Australia's number one enemy.
"Well, Stuart, just to reflect on a bit of news that emerged from Down Under overnight that seems to have gone down like a bucket of sick with the locals, namely that you're going to be commentating on one of the local channels in the Ashes," said Atherton during commentary on Sky Sports.
Atherton further mentioned that the publications are calling him a "smug, pommy, cheat" and asking for Broad to be banned from Australia.
"Just a reminder of how popular you are down there, the Brisbane Courier Mail, that couldn't bring themselves to put a photo of you on the front page and then called you a smug, pommy, cheat, Broadban. Are you looking forward to going down to Australia this winter to commentate on the Ashes?" Atherton questioned.
The reaction generated a hilarious response from everyone around, including Stuart Broad, who was on commentary at that time.
Replying to Atherton, Broad hilariously said that he agreed to being called a "pommy" and a "cheat", but that he wouldn't consider himself "smug", a person who is self-satisfied, which he doesn't think he is.
"Well, I sort of obviously agree with the pommy and the cheat bit, but I don't think I'm smug," Broad replied.
Stuart Broad's Love-Hate Relationship With Australia
As it turned out, during the 2013 Ashes, Stuart Broad was being labelled the enemy, as he became a villain for the Australian side in one of the most infamous moments in The Ashes history. The opening game at the Ashes at Trent Bridge saw Broad edging a ball to slip, where Michael Clarke was stationed.
A delivery from Ashton Agar got the edge; however, the left-handed batter didn't walk at all, while the umpire Aleem Dar believed that it was not out. The media and the fans Down Under went wild, calling him a cheat and a disgrace, while booing him every time he walked out in Australia.
The Ashes 2025 promises to be another highly electric affair, where the five-match series will begin on November 21st in Perth and will be played until January 4th-8th at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), where the final & fifth Test is scheduled.
