Joe Root has emerged as England’s quintessential run-maker in Tests over the past few years. The legendary Englishman has even plundered over 400 runs in the ongoing five-match Test series so far against India at home, courtesy of his commanding tons at Lord’s and Manchester last month.
However, Root might still come up short against Australia later this year when England take their Ashes flight ‘Down Under’, at least according to former opening batter David Warner.
Josh Hazlewood Has Joe Root’s Number, Brags Warner
Currently in England for a stint with London Spirit in the upcoming Men’s The Hundred 2025 season, David Warner took a dig at in-form English batter Joe Root. The former opener stated that while Root is supposed to be England’s ‘big anchor’ with the bat, he is yet to get a Test century on Australian soil.
Moreover, David Warner also bragged about Josh Hazlewood’s splendid track record against Joe Root. Compatible to Warner’s claims, Hazlewood has dismissed Root 13 times in international cricket, including 10 times in Tests alone at an average of 31.4.
While talking with BBC Sport in an exclusive interview, David Warner said:
“The big anchor there is Rooty [England batter Joe Root], who is yet to score a hundred in Australia. Josh Hazlewood tends to have his number quite a lot. He will have to take the surfboard off his front leg.”
Joe Root averages a prolific 51.09 in Test cricket and recently soared past Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-aggregator in the format. However, the cricketer averages just 35.68 in Test matches played in Australia after 27 innings since his maiden Ashes tour of 2013.
Nonetheless, the 2025 Ashes series in Australia is set to commence from November 21 onwards at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
