In a full blown verbal attack, Mohammad Kaif reprimanded Indian batters for embarrassing themselves in Mumbai Test against part timer Glenn Phillips and Ajaz Patel who is nowhere close to being a quality spinner. Kaif added that spinners like Ajaz could be found in local clubs in India as his variations are brief and predictable.
Ajaz Patel horrified India in the third Test held at Mumbai as he picked twin fifers in two innings to become the leading foreign wicket-taker (25) in Wankhede stadium. With Mitchell Santner missing out due to injury, part-time spinner Glenn Phillips picked 4 wickets.
Indian batters had no answer to the duo’s spin web. The rank turner helped New Zealand expose the hosts’ shortcomings against spinners. With the whitewash, India’s stellar home record was tainted after 12 long years.
Kaif questions India's skill against spin
That being said, criticism is coming from all ends, with former cricketer Mohammad Kaif also joining the debate. In his Twitter video, Kaif rebuked Indian batters for surrendering against average spinners.
He revealed that Ajaz Patel is predictable and has no control over the pitch of the ball. Not only that, Kaif went on to add that spinners like Ajaz can be found in any local club in India. While the former cricketer praised Santner for his heroics in the Pune Test, he opined that India’s awful display of batting in Mumbai was embarrassing, to say the least.
Notably, only two Indian batters scored a half century in Mumbai, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. Ajaz Patel accumulated 11 wickets followed by Phillips with 4 wickets, Matt Henry with 2 and Ish Sodhi had a single dismissal.
Sehwag calls out India’s terrible performance vs NZ
Virender Sehwag congratulated New Zealand on the whitewash whilst criticising India simultaneously in a social media post. He wrote that India’s performance has been terrible throughout the series as their technique against spin got exposed. He called for an upgrade in skills and also advised the management to refrain from experiments and respect Test format for its traditional nature.
