The IPL retentions are released as all the ten teams have finalised their key players ahead of the mega auction. Some franchises made baffling decisions while retaining the players, while some did an excellent job as they identified their core side.
A good IPL team is comprised of great Indian and foreign players. While having a strong Indian core is important, it is also to be noted that quality foreign players elevate the team which eventually helps in winning the IPL title.
During the retention deadline day, some key foreign players were released by their respective franchises. Ahead of the mega auction, we look at 3 foreign players who can be the most expensive buy in the upcoming auction.
3) Jake Fraser-McGurk
Delhi Capitals sprung a surprise when they decided not to retain their explosive opener, Jake Fraser-McGurk. He was the breakout star of the IPL in 2024, and everyone expected the franchise to retain their star opener.
However, Delhi's mistake could be someone else's blessing as many teams will try and fight it out for his services in the IPL 2025. A power-packed opener is a boon for the IPL teams and teams will splash huge amount of money to purchase him.
2) Jos Buttler
Rajasthan Royals made the most baffling decision by not retaining Jos Buttler. He was arguably their best player for the last three seasons, and should have been retained by the Pink Army. No one can forget his 2022 season, where he smacked 4 centuries in a single season and scored 863 runs as Rajasthan reached the finals.
Many IPL teams need a quality opener and a captain, and Buttler fits the bill perfectly. A T20 World Cup winning captain, Buttler will be a huge asset for any side and don't be surprised if teams splash out in excess of 20 crores for him.
1) Mitch Starc
Many were left amused when KKR purchased Mitch Starc for INR 24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction. However, despite a slow start, Starc came to life in the playoffs and delivered match-winning spells to help KKR win the title for the third time.
Quality left-arm pacer is a rare commodity in cricket and Starc is one of them. He can swing the new ball and can take wickets up top. The quick bowler has a winning mentality and always delivers his 100%. He can be another player who goes for big money, and probably will once again go in the region of 15-20 crores.
