Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta has some intriguing thoughts about what’s ahead of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Dasgupta believes this series will be much tighter than previous encounters. While India has been successful in Australia before, this tim, they face a stronger home team.

he said on the talkSport Cricket YouTube channel. He pointed out that in the 2018 series, Australia was missing key players like David Warner and Steve Smith, and the last time India toured, the Australian setup was not as strong. But with a revamped and more cohesive team now, Dasgupta believes that Australia will put up a significant fight.

“Yes (if India will win). But it’s going to be a lot closer than the last couple of series, which India won in Australia because I thought the last couple of, obviously the first one, 2018, Warner and Smithy, all these guys weren’t available. Then, the last one, I don’t think there was something wrong with that Australian setup back then,” Dasgupta said.

“I mean, with Pat Cummins in and you know, all those guys, I think it’s a better team and a more cohesive Australian side as compared to the last time when India toured. India, I still would say would have the edge with experience and everything,” he added.

So, what gives India the edge? According to Dasgupta, experience plays a huge role. With experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the lineup, the team has a solid foundation.

However, it’s not just the batsmen that need to shine; the success of the team largely hinges on their fast bowlers. India boasts a world-class pace attack, but there’s a big concern looming over the fitness of their star bowlers.

“…a big question mark for me is India’s, see India’s success outside India is on the back of Indian fast bowlers. Shami has been injured. He hasn’t played any competitive cricket as yet, as we record this. Bumrah, we know he’s been off and on with injuries and stuff like that. Will he be fit enough to play all five test matches? So the next lot, (Mohammed) Siraj and all are coming in. But I mean, again, if India can put all those three guys for all those five test matches, I’d say India’s got the edge,” he said.

Looking back at India’s history in Australia, the memories are sweet. In 2018-19, India made headlines by winning their first-ever Test series down under, clinching it with a 2-1 scoreline. They repeated this feat in 2021-22, even with many star players sidelined.

India will be up against Australia in a five-match Test series starting November 22. The first match will be played in Perth, followed by the second match at Adelaide Oval, which will be the only day-night Test of the series.
