Indian Premier League (IPL) auction is among the most watched and exciting bidding events in the sporting world. While it is the cricketers who hog the limelight, the success of all IPL auctions owes much to the poise and professionalism of the auctioneers who have presided over them.

Celebrating the rich legacy of IPL auctions, here we take a look at every individual who has wielded the iconic IPL gavel over the years.

1. Richard Madley (2008-2018)

Richard Madley was appointed as IPL’s first-ever auctioneer back in 2008. He went on to play a pivotal role in building the auction’s reputation and energy over the next decade, thus becoming IPL’s longest running auctioneer to date.

While he oversaw significant bids during his time holding the hammer, Madley recently expressed his regret of not getting the chance to auction Indian batting greats Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Nonetheless, he is currently the primary auctioneer of South Africa-based SA20 League.

2. Hugh Edmeades (2019-2023)

Hugh Edmeades replaced Richard Madley as IPL auctioneer for the 2019 edition of the tournament. Primarily an expert in auctioning off fine art and classic cars, Edmeades was retained by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as IPL auctioneer for four more seasons to remain active until 2023.

However, a brief health scare on the first day of the IPL 2022 auction prompted the IPL officials to replace him with Indian commentator and notable quizmaster Charu Sharma.

3. Charu Sharma (2022)

Veteran Indian sports commentator and broadcaster Charu Sharma auctioned at the IPL 2022 bidding event as Hugh Edmeades’ replacement. Sharma, who was present at the auction venue, was called in after Edmeades suffered “postural hypotension” and collapsed on the floor in the ballroom area of the hotel.

Charu Sharma’s broadcasting experience came in handy, as he seamlessly helmed the responsibility even on short notice. Moreover, he even received a standing ovation after he graciously stepped aside when original auctioneer Edmeades returned to the stage.

4. Mallika Sagar (2024-2025)

During IPL 2024 auction, Mallika Sagar created history by becoming the first woman to host a bidding event. She also conducted the auction of the first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) season back in 2023, for which she earned much praise from Indian wicketkeeper-batter and commentator Dinesh Karthik.

Mallika made her return for the IPL 2025 mega auction in Saudi Arabia, and might well helm the role of the auctioneer for a few more years by the looks of her charisma and successful tenure so far. Outside cricket, she has conducted auctions for the all-popular Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
