Indian spinner and all-round apparent Washington Sundar spent his last three IPL seasons with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise. However, in light of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the 25-year-old was released by the SRH management on the day of retention announcement.
Regardless, Sundar has been busy restoring his stocks to prominence with a string of impressive performances for Team India off late. By making a remarkable Test return against New Zealand and by starring in India’s white-ball wins against Bangladesh, there is a bright chance that several IPL franchises have already lined up to shell out big money for acquiring the talented Indian cricketer at the impending mega auction. Here, we take a look at three such franchises who can target Washington Sundar.
3. Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians has a history of having at least one skilled Indian spinner in their ranks every IPL season. After releasing Piyush Chawla from the line-up, Washington Sundar might well be on MI management’s agenda for future editions. Moreover, they need to restock their spin arsenal at the auction, considering they did not retain a single spinner on October 31. With his credentials, Washington Sundar will certainly fit into the MI ranks, and his spin dexterity will surely come in handy on the Wankhede surface in Mumbai.
2. Sunrisers Hyderabad
Even though Washington Sundar was released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad management, the cricketer might very well be retained by the franchise at the auction. Much like Mumbai Indians, the SRH also did not retain a single specialist spinner and will be aiming to refill its spin reserve. Since Washington is already accustomed with the workings of the franchise, and has played several matches at SRH’s home ground of Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, he is possibly one of the leading candidates to retain his spot in the ‘Orange Army’.
1. Punjab Kings
With just two retentions, the Punjab Kings franchise will enter the IPL 2025 mega auction with the largest available purse. The recent resurgence of Washington Sundar for Team India might well have prompted the PBKS management to put him on their auction agenda. Apart from sending down some tight and wicket-taking overs, Sundar also has a sound batting technique and holds a strike rate of nearly 120 in all T20s. A quality all-rounder will only benefit Punjab Kings at this stage, as they aim to revamp their squad for IPL 2025.
Washington Sundar Stats
Washington Sundar made his IPL debut back in 2017 for the Rising Pune Supergiants franchise. Since then, the cricketer has gone on to play 60 matches for three different teams, taking 37 wickets in the process at an average of 35.81. It is his impressive economy rate that stands out the most, considering the right-arm off-spinner has conceded his runs at just 7.54 an over.
With the bat, Sundar has tallied 378 runs in 40 innings at an average of 13.50 and a strike rate of 116.30.
