The ICC Under-19 World Cup has long served as a launchpad for emerging cricketers, offering young talents a global stage to showcase their skills. For batters, the tournament presents an early test of temperament, consistency, and adaptability against varied opposition, often shaping future stars while highlighting performances that stand the test of time.
Here, we take a look at five batters who have maximised their opportunities in the single edition of an Under-19 World Cup by amassing remarkable run tallies.
5. Donovan Pagon – 421 runs in 2002
Forgotten West Indies star Donovan Pagon accrued 421 runs in the 2002 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand at a prolific average of 70.16. The right-handed batter plundered three fifty-plus scores in the process, which included a match-winning knock of 176 from just 129 balls against Scotland Under-19 in Dunedin in a Group D match of the tournament. Overall, Pagon maintained an astonishing strike rate of 94.18 and clattered over 50 boundaries and eight huge sixes to finish the World Cup as one of its highest run-getters.
4. Cameron White – 423 runs in 2002
Former Australian all-rounder Cameron White lit up the 2002 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, amassing 423 runs in just eight innings at a staggering average of 70.50. Aged only 18 at the time, White tonked a blistering 156* off 121 balls against Scotland in Dunedin, peppering the boundary with 10 fours and four sixes in a match-winning masterclass. He added two more half-centuries to his tally and finished not only as the tournament’s leading run-getter but also as a World Cup winner.
White’s prolific exploits at the junior stage proved a springboard to a decorated international career, where he featured in four Tests, 138 white-ball fixtures, and played a hand in Australia’s 2009 Champions Trophy triumph in South Africa.
3. Brett Williams – 471 runs in 1988
Brett Williams emerged as the leading batting powerhouse of the 1988 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Australia, amassing 471 runs from just nine innings. The right-hander combined consistency with flair, averaging 52.33 at a brisk strike rate of 85.23. He carved out two centuries in the tournament, which included a match-defining knock of 108 from 134 balls against Pakistan in the high-octane final at the Adelaide Oval.
Ironically, despite being the hero of Australia’s title-winning campaign, Williams never donned the national colours at the senior level, a reminder of how talent sometimes slips through the international net.
2. Shikhar Dhawan – 505 runs in 2004
Legendary Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan catapulted himself into the limelight at the 2004 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, amassing a record-shattering 505 runs at an average of 84.16. Towering more than 100 runs clear of his nearest rival, Alastair Cook, the left-hander hammered three centuries and registered the tournament’s highest strike rate (93.51) among all batters with 250-plus runs, let alone 500.
In doing so, Shikhar Dhawan also became the first player in Under-19 World Cup history to breach the 500-run mark in a single edition, an achievement replicated only once since.
1. Dewald Brevis – 506 runs in 2022
South Africa’s batting dynamite Dewald Brevis set the 2022 Under-19 World Cup ablaze in the Caribbean, amassing a staggering 506 runs in just six innings. With two centuries and three half-centuries to his name, he became only the second player in Under-19 World Cup history to breach the 500-run barrier in a single edition, before going one better to establish the all-time record.
Brevis hammered 18 towering sixes, all while averaging 84.33 at a strike rate of 90.19, numbers that underlined both consistency and flair. Needless to say, the tournament served as his launchpad, fast-tracking him towards South Africa’s white-ball future.
