Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra’s love story is one of Bollywood and cricket’s most charming tales. But beyond love, the Bollywood actress had a very special condition before agreeing to marry the Indian spinner.

It all began in 2007 at a friend’s party in London, where the Indian cricket team was touring. Harbhajan saw Geeta Basra for the first time and was instantly smitten. He even got her number through Yuvraj Singh after spotting her on a movie poster.

Why Did Geeta Basra Make Harbhajan Singh Wait For 10 Months?

In a recent interview on Bharti TV, Geeta Basra revealed that she didn’t instantly give in to Harbhajan Singh’s charm. She had just started her Bollywood career with films like ‘Dil Diya Hai’ and ‘The Train’ and wanted to focus on her work.

“He was very clear. He saw my poster, and it was probably love at first sight for him. He asked Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) for my number. They’d just won the World Cup. So a couple of days later, I’d messaged, ‘Well done! Congratulations!’ That’s it," she said.

Being linked to a cricketer was risky for her image in the film industry, and she even admitted to losing out on a few film roles because of relationship rumours.

"We got in touch again. When we met, he was very clear he didn’t want friendship and said, ‘Tere se hi shaadi karunga’. I said, ‘Shaadi?’ I was only 21. Fifteen years ago, it was a very different time for women. Even if you were spotted with someone, your career was over," she added.

Still, Harbhajan Singh never gave up. The two often spoke over long phone calls, so long, in fact, that once Harbhajan’s bill shot up to nearly Rs 27,000. Their conversations slowly built a strong bond.

But Geeta wasn’t ready to commit right away. Instead, she jokingly put one condition before Harbhajan that she would agree only after he had taken 300 international wickets.

"I told him the day you’d score 300 wickets, I’d say yes. A couple of days later, he got 300 wickets. So I said let’s give it a shot. Because all my friends told me he’s a very good guy. He’s a star, but doesn’t have the attitude of a star. He’s humble. He’s also a Punjabi like me. That matters a lot."

Harbhajan, with his undeniable determination, achieved that milestone within days. Keeping her promise, Geeta eventually agreed to take a chance at love.

Geeta-Harbhajan Hid Their Courtship For 8 Years

The couple, however, decided to keep their personal relationship under wraps for almost eight years, shunning media glare and concentrating on their individual careers.

Only in 2015, after all these years, did Harbhajan Singh marry Geeta Basra in a big Punjabi wedding ceremony in Jalandhar, followed by a star-studded reception in Mumbai attended by cricketing greats and Bollywood celebrities.

Today, Harbhajan and Geeta are proud parents of two children, daughter Hinaya and son Jovan. Geeta has stepped away from films to focus on family life, while Harbhajan has retired from cricket and is active in commentary and politics.
