41-ball century for Dewald Brevis [Source: @cricketcomau/x]
Dewald Brevis rained down on Australia with a barrage of sixes and boundaries at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin in the second T20I of the three-match series. The fiery South African batter recorded one of the fastest T20I centuries by any Proteas cricketer in the process.
Following his brutal onslaught against the likes of Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa, here is a look at the revised list of five fastest T20I centuries recorded by South African batters in history.
5. Faf du Plessis and David Miller – 46 balls each, in 2015 and 2022 respectively
Back in January 2015, then South Africa captain Faf du Plessis smeared a 46-ball century against West Indies in the second T20I of a three-match series in Johannesburg. Batting at number three, Faf blasted 11 fours and five huge sixes to whack 119 runs from just 56 balls.
Nearly seven-and-a-half years later in Guwahati in a match against hosts India, blistering middle-order batter David Miller replicated the feat while batting at five. Racing to his century from 46 balls, Miller concluded his innings at an explosive 106* off 47. Notably, both Faf du Plessis and David Miller’s 46-ball tons failed to yield winning success for South Africa.
4. Richard Levi – 45 balls, 2012
South Africa’s forgotten batting star Richard Levi pounded 117* runs off just 51 deliveries with five fours and 13 huge sixes at Seddon Park in Hamilton in the second T20I of the series against hosts New Zealand back in February 2012. Opening the innings, Levi’s blitzkrieg helped South Africa mow down New Zealand’s competitive 173-run total upfront with eight wickets and four overs to spare as the visitors levelled the series to enforce a decider.
3. Quinton de Kock – 43 balls, 2023
Explosive opener Quinton de Kock scripted T20I cricket’s highest successful run-chase of all time with his splendid century back in March 2023 at Centurion. The wicketkeeper-batter clattered nine fours and eight huge sixes to whack 100 off just 43 balls against West Indies, before falling to Raymon Reifer off his very next delivery. Quinton shared a 152-run opening partnership with Reeza Hendricks in less than 11 overs to map out a winning foundation for South Africa in their tall chase of 259 runs, which they ultimately conquered in the penultimate over with six wickets in hand.
2. Dewald Brevis – 41 balls, 2025
Dewald Brevis, aged 22, defied Australia’s champion bowlers in their own background with his fiery 41-ball ton in the second T20I of the three-match series in August 2025. Batting at number four at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin, Brevis launched 12 boundaries and eight huge sixes overall in his thunderous 125* off just 56 deliveries. He successfully took on the likes of senior Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood and wily leg-spinner Adam Zampa as South Africa mounted 218-7 in 20 overs in their must-win game.
1. David Miller – 35 balls, 2017
South African batting dynamite David Miller unleashed a 35-ball ton against Bangladesh in October 2017 at Potchefstroom to record the fastest-ever century by any Proteas batter in T20I cricket. Remarkably, Miller raced to his three-figure mark despite arriving to the crease at the halfway stage of the innings following the dismissal of AB de Villiers at 78-3. Miller clubbed seven boundaries and nine huge sixes to reach 101* off just 36 balls as South Africa mounted 224-4 in 20 overs.
The blistering left-hander even launched Bangladesh fast bowler Mohammad Saifuddin for five successive sixes in the penultimate over of the innings.
