It's no mystery that India have always struggled against tough conditions in England, especially in Test cricket. Swing-friendly pitches, overcast skies, and England's solid batting lineups have always been hindrances for Indian bowlers.
But some Indian pacers reversed the script, coming up with match-winning spells that not only helped their team but also put them in the history books. Here are the top five Indian bowlers with the most wickets in a Test series in England.

In 2018, veteran pacer Ishant Sharma showed why he is well-regarded for his experience and endurance. In 5 Tests, Ishant bowled 151 overs and took 18 wickets at 24.27 runs per wicket. He also had a memorable spell of 5/51 at Lord's. Even though India lost the series 4-1, Ishant’s performances showed how much he had evolved as a leader of the bowling attack.

Left-arm seam bowler Zaheer Khan was the spine of Indian bowling during their historic 2007 series triumph in England. Featuring in only 3 Tests, he took 18 wickets at an excellent average of 20.33. His best match figures were 5/75 and 9/134. Zaheer's left-arm trajectory and reverse swing ability played the most important role in supporting India to win their first Test series in England after 1986.

Back in 2014, swing king Bhuvneshwar Kumar left English batters puzzled. In just 7 innings across 5 Tests, he bowled nearly 173 overs and took 19 wickets at an average of 26.63. His best performance came with figures of 6/82, and although India lost the series, Bhuvi’s performances were a bright spark. His control and ability to swing the ball both ways made him India’s most dependable bowler on that tour.

India’s hard-working fast bowler Mohammed Siraj peaked during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which also ended in a 2-2 draw. He bowled 185.3 overs, taking 23 wickets with best figures of 6/70, and maintained a bowling average of 32.43.
Siraj's hard-hitting and tireless spells converted crucial moments in favour of India, most notably in the last Test, where he delivered a brilliant five-wicket haul on Day 5 to help secure a thrilling victory. Siraj's development as a spearhead was apparent throughout the series.

In the Pataudi Trophy of 2021-22, Jasprit Bumrah was India's standout bowler. He played 5 Tests, bowled 187 overs, and took 23 wickets at an average of 22.47. His career-best effort was 5/64, and he finished the series with a match haul of 9/110. Though the series was drawn, Bumrah's lethal accuracy, speed, and capacity to reverse swing made him an English batter's worst nightmare. His contribution was the turning point in India remaining competitive throughout the tour.
