New Zealand star left-hand batters, captain Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra, combined for a mammoth 279-run partnership on December 4, as they faced the West Indies at the Hagley Oval, in their first Test of the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
As they put the Kiwis in a commanding position to open their account in the WTC table with this stand, we explore the biggest partnerships in NZ vs WI Test history.
5. Charlie Davis & Garry Sobers- 254 runs
During the third Test of New Zealand's tour of the Caribbean in 1972 at Bridgetown, the hosts were bowled out for just 133 runs in the first innings and NZ managed to take a big lead of 289 runs lead in the Test.
Once again in the second innings, WI found themselves in a precarious situation at 171/5 and potentially looking at an innings defeat, before captain Garry Sobers joined Charlie Davis and added 254 runs for the sixth wicket. Sobers scored 142, while Davis got run out at 183 and helped WI to draw the match.
4. Roy Fredricks & Lawrence Rowe- 269 runs
In the first Test of the aforementioned series, batting first in Kingston, opener Roy Fredricks and number 3 batter Lawrence Rowe gave WI a great start, scoring 163 and 214, respectively. The latter joined Fredricks at 78/1, and the duo added 269 runs before the opener was caught and bowled by Hedley Howarth.
Their stand helped the team reach 508/4 (d) in the first innings. They went on to take a 122-run lead and subsequently set a target of 341 runs, where Rowe scored another 100*. However, the match eventually ended in a draw.
3. Adrian Griffith & Sherwin Campbell- 276 runs
The right-hand-left-hand combination of Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffith started the West Indies' tour of New Zealand 1999/2000 in a stylish fashion, with a mammoth stand of 276 runs to give their team an early advantage in the match. The Campbell scored 170(262) with 23 fours and two sixes, while Griffith showed his resolute defence, scoring 114 off 346, with 10 fours and one six.
Despite their 276-run opening stand, they collapsed and finished with 365/10, thanks to a four-fer from Daniel Vettori. New Zealand took a 28-run first innings lead before Chris Cairns ran away with the match, scalping 7/27, and the Kiwis comfortably chased down 70 runs.
2. Tom Latham & Rachin Ravindra- 279 runs
Batting first in the opening Test of the home series vs WI, the hosts took a 64-run lead in Christchurch. In the third innings of the match, they lost Devon Conway and Kane Williamson early in the innings, with 100/2 on the board. Captain Latham and Rachin Ravindra made sure that they avoided a collapse and stitched a 279-run 3rd wicket partnership. Ravindra was the one who attacked, scoring 176(185) with 27 fours and a six, while Latham took the back seat, scoring 145(250), with 12 fours to his name.
At the time NZ lost Latham, they already found themselves in the winning position, leading by 443 runs, with over two days left in the match.
